On Tuesday, December 14, 2021, U.S.-Russia Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) and its Committee for Industrial Policy and Technical Regulation hosted its virtual 4th Standardization Conference.
Mr. Andrey Lotsmanov, Deputy Co-Chairman of Committee of Industrial Policy and Technical Regulation, Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, served as a moderator of the Conference.
Over 70 registrants representing PJSC “TMK”, PJSC “Gazprom Neft”, Russian Institute for Standardization, OMK, HMS Group, Rosniti, as well as Russian standardization bodies representatives were able to participate in the discussion of requirements for hydrogen pipes production, hydrogen pipes certification, development of new standards in the United States related to hydrogen and energy transition.
Speakers representing almost all main US standardization bodies participated in the 4th Standardization Conference:
  • David Miller, Senior Director, Standards Development, American Petroleum Institute;
  • Christopher Mahler, Director, Derivative Programs, Conformity Assessment, ASME;
  • Nick Ecart, Senior Director, Business Development, Europe, Middle East, Russia, India & Africa, ASTM International.
Speakers’ presentations were followed up with moderated Q&A session. Attendees of the Conference asked questions regarding requirements for pipes certification, the qualified presumption of safety system, the process of standards renovation, and many others.

On December 2, 2021, U.S.-Russia Chamber of Commerce and its North East Chapter hosted its “by invite only” New York City Networking Reception. 
This event gathered over 40 executives from metals, energy, logistics & transportation, technology, real estate, finance, and other industries at Cornell Club Manhattan. Representatives of Greenwich Metals Inc., J.P. Morgan, Stemcor USA Inc., Ifchor North America, Brown Brothers Harriman, Goldman Sachs & Co., Glencore Ltd., Trident Commodities, Bloomberg, and other companies attended the event.
Anton Posner, CEO of The Mercury Group and USRCC’s North East Chapter Chairman welcomed all reception guests on behalf of the USRCC and thanked all the reception sponsors who made this event possible. Mr. Scherwinski opened the webinar with welcoming remarks and overview of the USRCC and its T&I Committee.

Speakers have discussed the impressive technological advances that have recently been taking place in the aerospace industry, such as digitalization and 3D printing, improving the value of Model-Based Systems Engineering in the product lifecycle process, history of model base vs paper base design, future of MBE at propulsion systems. The recent trends include developments in virtual and augmented reality, product field application and model based design and enterprise. VR helps customers to understand scale and complexity of projects and helps engineers to identify design flaws before the first build. Cultural changes associated with moving away from 2D model design were also discussed.

On Tuesday, June 22nd, the USRCC hosted its “by invitation only” webinar “Energy Dialogue: Part 2 – State of Energy Industry and Its Future” with PJSC “LUKOIL” Chairman of the Board Ravil Maganov. More than 60 executives from United States of America and Russia representing such companies as PJSC “LUKOIL”, Parker Drilling, Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Sulzer GTC Technology, Neftegaz, Mitsui, Miller and Lents, ASTM International, JSC “NEK”, Total, Moody Rambin, Flotek Industries, IHS Markit, Optimized Gas Treating, the University of Houston and many others attended this event.

Mr. Maganov in his presentation covered LUKOIL’s vision for the oil & gas industry future and LUKOIL’s energy transition. Mr. Maganov presented several liquids demand scenarios for stricter climate regulations. Also, Mr. Maganov emphasized the important issue of achieving zero poverty, as around 800 million people still have no access to electricity. Hydrocarbon demand prospects were also covered during his presentation. Mr. Maganov stressed LUKOIL’s ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. LUKOIL is looking at a broad list of climate opportunities such as production of green hydrogen, biofuels and methanol with CO2 capture.

The Energy Dialogue was moderated by John Gibson, President and CEO of Flotek Industries. Some of following questions were addressed by Mr. Maganov during the moderated Q&A session:
  • Carbon capture utilization and storage in terms of sequestration;
  • LUKOIL diversification into alternative energy: solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, HPP;
  • Hydrogen strategy of LUKOIL;
  • Digital transformation of LUKOIL across its broad international business while avoiding cloud technologies;
  • The carbon tax burden compromise between producers and consumers;
  • Production decline impact as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.

This year the reception was attended by about 160 international business and political leaders, including leading experts and executives from oil and gas industry, banking, shipping, transportation and logistics companies, suppliers, investors, and Government officials.

Welcome remarks were made by Honorable Alexander Zakharov, Consul General, Consulate General of Russian Federation in Houston, who reinforced the importance of energy industry and Russia’s role in energy transition. Mr. Zakharov’s remarks were followed by the speech given by Thomas Schuessler, Senior Vice President of ExxonMobil Production Company who spoke about networking opportunities provided by the reception and thanked the USRCC for its organizational efforts. He stressed the importance of commercial ties for ExxonMobil with Russia and CIS countries. Sandy Esslemont, CEO of Parker Drilling Company, reflected on being a part of Parker Drilling legacy working in Kazakstan, Russia and CIS. Jeff Shellebarger, Chairman of 23rd World Petroleum Congress Organizing Committee talked about the WPC‘s history and mission that has developed over the years and its continuing relationship with Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. He invited business leaders to join the 23rd World Petroleum Congress, which will take place in Houston in December of 2021.

In conclusion of the official portion of the reception the USRCC held a raffle sponsored by Turkish Airlines. Mr. Ken Bhappu, Regional Corporate Sales Manager, Turkish Airlines, commented on the fact that Turkish Airlines has the largest number of destinations in comparison with any other airline in the world and emphasized specific destinations that Turkish Airlines fly to in Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. The lucky winner of the raffle was Tad Pilinski, President of AUTUS Corporation.

Over 80 registrants from USA, Russia and CIS were engaged in discussion of supply chain and construction challenges, post-COVID new design challenges from development to end-user, current real estate investment climate, and advantages of the U.S. commercial real estate market and current projects.

The pandemic added to the softening of the office market in USA and Houston specifically thus creating opportunities for office tenants to make better long term lease transactions on office space. Buyers are also looking for investment properties to take advantage of an office building market that is forecast to improve in 2022 and beyond.

On Thursday, March 30th, the USRCC together with the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) and its Committee for Industrial Policy and Technical Regulation hosted its 3rd Standardization Conference.

Over 360 registrants from United States of America, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other CIS countries attended the Conference. Rules for obtaining licensed translations, standards development system, products certification rules, work in technical committees of the U.S. standardization organizations, understanding of the differences between the U.S.A. and Russian standardization systems, standards development processes and standards committees, and other related questions were discussed.
